As an outsider, I don't mind things being the way they are. What concerns me is that, 20 years from now, the professors are going to be talking about project management whereas the students will be more concerned with the nature of justice and legal thinking. What a nightmarish, catastrophic scenario for the profession that would be.

Hi Julia,

Thanks for your comments! One thing to keep in mind: US schools have outrageous tuition fees, but they also give a large amount of financial aid almost automatically. That is especially true for the schools that are not "prestigious". Everything else you said is absolutely right.

I came across this blog after doing some research on tuition costs of Canadian law schools and you've definitely got it right! I took a look at US schools and their first year tuition blew my mind! The one school in particular wasn't even a "prestigious" school. I have been reading a blog based in the US that talks about the lack of jobs for new lawyers, but I think a huge problem there is that new law schools are popping up every where, so they may be turning out more lawyers than are needed.

Anyway, I have just read your blog from the first post, and it is great to read your perspective of UWO law. This is exactly what I've been searching for and I'm excited to read your thoughts on 2nd and 3rd year!

I know that a short conversation from the "away" zone cost me 30 cents on Wind. Same conversation on Fido was always measured in dollars ($1-$3). I know it doesn't make sense, but it's true. I think Fido tacked on some extra fees.

As for the phones, Wind's selection is always growing, and Blackberries are equally expensive across the board. Would a BB you get from Wind really cost that much more than the one you buy elsewhere?

Anyway, I'm cheering for any new company that enters this hopeless market and I'm doing my best to support them. I feel nothing but disgust for Bell, Telus and Rogers, hope they all go belly-up ASAP.

>They use the same wavelengths that are used throughout the world.

That's not exactly true. Wind operates on the AWS 1700MhZ frequency. Most phones that would support Wind have 850/900/1800 support for the regular (2G) GSM network and 1700/2100 for (3G) AWS. The problem is that most phone on the market today don't support AWS. What that means in practice is that you can buy a phone from wind and use it on other networks. However, you cannot do the opposite: you can't buy a phone somewhere else and use it on Wind. The only other carrier that operates in 1700 in T-Mobile US, so only their phones are compatible.

>If you live in the area covered by the network, Wind totally makes sense.

If you live in that area and never leave that area. What are away prices like anyway? I can't see them being cheaper that Rogers/Fido because you're roaming on the Rogers/Fido network...

>What really got me away from Fido was constantly ballooning fees.

And they do it because they can. No effective competition. Let's see if the new entrants measure up.

I disagree about Wind. They use the same wavelengths that are used throughout the world. Also, they unlock those phones you buy so you can switch to another carrier - something monopolists like Bell would never do. You don't pay through the nose outside the network, the "away" prices are actually cheaper than Fido, and the area of the "home" network is larger. As well, that area keeps expanding all the time. If you live in the area covered by the network, Wind totally makes sense.

What really got me away from Fido was constantly ballooning fees. Something went up every month for no reason whatsoever; very annoying. The last straw was when they decided Burlington was "long-distance" from TO, that was it for me. Another annoying feature were free Fido-to-Fido/Rogers calls. At first, it seemed like a great idea, but then I found myself constantly asking friends to call me back from their cell so that we can save minutes. This is no way to live in the 21 century. :)
